Obtaining of strontium-aluminium-silicate glass -ceramic with high homogeneity

In this work, the influence of mechanical activation of the glass
batch on the process of glass melting and homogeneity of the resulting
glass, was considered. As the object of research was selected
the glass with composition 40 wt.% SiO2, 30 wt.% Al2O3, 20 wt.%
SrO and 10 wt.% TiO2, characterized by a high refractoriness. Mechanical
activation of the glass batch was carried out by fine grinding
in a planetary mill. Specific surface area of the obtained powder
was 0.9 m2/g. It was shown that the processes of silicate formation
and glass formation in the activated glass batch is shifted towards
lower temperatures is about of 100–150 °C. This helps to reduce
the temperature of the glass melting on 50–100 °C. The homogeneity
of the glass, obtained from activated and non-activated glass
batch, was determined by evaluating the uniformity of crystallization
of bulk samples. In the glass, obtained from non-activated
glass batch, the crystallization process was observed non-uniform
change in color and transparency. This indicates the presence of
chemical heterogeneities with the size of hundreds micrometers.
On the contrary, change the color and transparency of the glass
obtained from the activated glass batch was uniform. It indicates
the uniform distribution of crystalline phase. This is possible only
under condition of high homogeneity of the original glass. Thus,
the mechanical activation of glass batch provides a more homogeneous
glass than the glass batch with traditional particle size.
